I describe my knifemaking as “Sufficiently Evil, Deliberately Casual.” I take the function side of knifemaking very seriously. Things like edge geometry, heat treatment, and handle fit make up the heart of the knife. But choices like polish, handle and guard materials, and the “form” of a knife make up its soul. This is where I get to play and have fun. Finding that balance between pratical and whimsical is where knifemaking becomes enjoyably crazy.
I split my knifemaking into 2 categories-
Stock Removal Knives
Stock removal knives are my "gateway drug" into custom knives. I try to keep these in the $100-$250 range. My ground blades are made from 1095 steel. They tend to be full tang and made from a variety of stock patterns I use. Handles are usually synthetics or stabilized woods with copper, brass, or stainless hardware
Forged Knives
My forged blades are more varied. Rather than set patterns my forging pieces tend to be more individually designed. When forging I tend to gravitate towards San Mai and pattern welded steel blades. However I will do forged monosteel blades if I want a "cleaner" look for the piece. These are usually hidden tang and can be stabilized burls and other figured woods, synthetics, bone, or horn. My forged blades start at $200 and average in the $250-$400 range.
